British Prime Minister Apologizes for missing Brexit deadline

Image
Britain’s election campaign heated up Sunday even before it officially started, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying he would apologize to Conservatives for failing to take the U.K. out of the European Union by Oct. 31 and Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage saying he won’t personally run for a seat in Parliament. Johnson’s promise to have Britain leave the bloc by Oct. 31 had been his central platform in the party leadership competition that brought him to power in July.  He told Sky News on Sunday that it was a matter of β€œdeep regret” that he failed to do so. Asked if he was sorry about missing the deadline, Johnson said: β€œYes, absolutely.” Johnson’s plan to leave by Oct. 31 with or without a divorce deal was blocked by Parliament, which required him to seek a Brexit extension. The EU has granted a three-month Brexit extension until Jan. 31. Johnson pushed hard for an early national election on Dec. 12 in which he hopes to get a more Brexit-friendly Parliament. One...

When he announced this emergency action plan, he promised an interim committee in his office would focus on its swift implementation. The measures included setting up a fund to help address gender-based violence, reviewing laws to prioritise the needs and interests of survivors and strengthening the criminal justice system. The plan further included overhauling the national register of offenders and making changes to the school curriculum to include gender power relations among others. UN willing to help foreign nationals in SA

United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Africa, Nardos Bekele-Thomas, has called on law enforcement agencies to refrain from forcefully removing children from their parents. This follows chaotic scenes in the City of Cape Town CBD on Wednesday- as police officials used stun grenades and water cannons in attempts to disperse foreign protesters – who staged a three-week sit in at the UN High Commission building. Around 300  foreigners   from countries such as Congo, Kenya, Somalia, Burundi and Nigeria were removed in terms of a court order. They are now demanding documentation to leave South Africa. Video footage from the protest shows police forcefully removing children from their parents or guardians. Bekele-Thomas says the UN is willing to assist them. β€œIt’s universally accepted that children should not be separated from their parents, especially forcefully. We are emphasizing the fact that they should not be separated in a forceful manner.” β€œ...

Last season, Gary Neville criticised Lingard for launching a line of clothing ahead of the defeat to li...

Shoulder injury ends Naomi osaka's hopes for WTA finals

Image
Naomi Osaka’s struggles at the WTA Finals continued on Tuesday as the world no. 3 was forced to withdraw from this year’s tournament in Shenzhen with a shoulder injury. Her exit from the competition comes two days after the Japanese right-hander won her opening match against Petra Kvitova, the first time she had secured victory at the season-ending competition. β€œIt’s not ideal,” said Osaka, who lost all of her matches on her debut in Singapore 12 months ago. β€œThis is the second time I had to withdraw from the finals. I mean, the last time I at least played, so a retirement instead of a withdrawal. β€œIt kind of sucks because I thought I was playing well. I definitely wanted to win here.” Osaka made her first appearance at the WTA Finals last year after winning the US Open but lost her first two matches before pulling out midway through a match with Kiki Bertens with an injury. On Sunday evening she ground out a 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 win over Kvitova to give hers...
