Image
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to give an update on the government’s efforts to end gender-based violence. Ramaphosa will address the nation in the National Assembly on Thursday afternoon when he responds to questions posed by members of Parliament. In September, the president announced an emergency five-point action plan to deal with the scourge of gender-based violence. When he announced this emergency action plan, he promised an interim committee in his office would focus on its swift implementation. The measures included setting up a fund to help address gender-based violence, reviewing laws to prioritise the needs and interests of survivors and strengthening the criminal justice system. The plan further included overhauling the national register of offenders and making changes to the school curriculum to include gender power relations among others. UN willing to help foreign nationals in SA

United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Africa, Nardos Bekele-Thomas, has called on law enforcement agencies to refrain from forcefully removing children from their parents. This follows chaotic scenes in the City of Cape Town CBD on Wednesday- as police officials used stun grenades and water cannons in attempts to disperse foreign protesters – who staged a three-week sit in at the UN High Commission building. Around 300  foreigners   from countries such as Congo, Kenya, Somalia, Burundi and Nigeria were removed in terms of a court order. They are now demanding documentation to leave South Africa. Video footage from the protest shows police forcefully removing children from their parents or guardians. Bekele-Thomas says the UN is willing to assist them. “It’s universally accepted that children should not be separated from their parents, especially forcefully. We are emphasizing the fact that they should not be separated in a forceful manner.” “...

Image
Jesse Lingard's clothing brand JLingz lost more than £200,000 in its first year. Manchester United and England star Lingard launched the brand in the summer of 2018, with the help of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Raheem Sterling.   JLingz, has a logo based on the midfielder's goal   celebration, and sells a range of clothes and  accessories from t-shirts to hats.   The first set of accounts for the company, of which Lingard is one of three directors, had a loss of £211,688, due to the amount it owes creditors. The manchester evening news reports the business had only been selling products for the second half of the year the accounts relate to, up to January this year. It was reported earlier this year that boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had warned Lingard and teammate Rashford to focus on football - rather than fashion. Last season, Gary Neville criticised Lingard for launching a line of clothing ahead of the defeat to li...

Shoulder injury ends Naomi osaka's hopes for WTA finals

Image
Naomi Osaka’s struggles at the WTA Finals continued on Tuesday as the world no. 3 was forced to withdraw from this year’s tournament in Shenzhen with a shoulder injury. Her exit from the competition comes two days after the Japanese right-hander won her opening match against Petra Kvitova, the first time she had secured victory at the season-ending competition. “It’s not ideal,” said Osaka, who lost all of her matches on her debut in Singapore 12 months ago. “This is the second time I had to withdraw from the finals. I mean, the last time I at least played, so a retirement instead of a withdrawal. “It kind of sucks because I thought I was playing well. I definitely wanted to win here.” Osaka made her first appearance at the WTA Finals last year after winning the US Open but lost her first two matches before pulling out midway through a match with Kiki Bertens with an injury. On Sunday evening she ground out a 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 win over Kvitova to give hers...

Image
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has disputed reports that there are factions within the party. The leadership of the party was conducting a site visit to Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, on Monday, where the party’s second elective conference will take place in December. Weekend reports claim a decision seems to have been made by party leader Julius Malema to remove National Chairperson Dali Mpofu ahead of the conference. However, another faction has put forward a list where Mpofu has been named as Chairperson. Malema says that every position in the EFF will be contested. Mpofu would not be drawn into confirming his availability should he be nominated for the leadership position from the floor during the conference. “This organisation will never be factionalised. So all those in the media that are trying to factionalise this organisation are going to fail because we have no time for factions; we have time for contestation…Contestation must never be confused with...
